From No. 42 to the Boardroom: Trey Payne Returns to Serve Georgia State

Former Georgia State football player and business leader Trey Payne joins the Alumni Association Board of Directors, bringing the discipline, resilience and team-first mentality he developed as a Panther.

As a student-athlete, Payne learned that meaningful progress is rarely achieved through talent alone. It requires preparation, accountability, trust and the willingness to keep showing up—especially when the outcome remains uncertain.

Those lessons followed him from the football field into his career and have helped shape his approach to leadership at Legacy Risk Solutions.

Today, Payne is returning to Georgia State as a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, beginning a new chapter of service to the university that helped shape him.

“Georgia State gave me a platform,” Payne said. “Returning as an Alumni Association board member is an opportunity to help strengthen it for the Panthers coming next.”

Forged on the Field, Carried into Legacy

College football taught Payne to embrace difficult assignments, remain prepared and contribute wherever the team needed him. The experience reinforced values that would become central to his professional life: discipline, resilience, teamwork and trust.

Those same principles are reflected in his leadership at Legacy Risk Solutions.

In an industry built around protecting businesses and people from uncertainty, preparation matters. Relationships matter. And success depends on a team willing to take ownership of the challenges in front of them.

For Payne, leadership at Legacy is not simply about holding a title. It is about doing the work, accepting responsibility and creating opportunities for the people around him to succeed.

The parallels to football are difficult to miss. Every person has a role, but meaningful results happen when everyone works toward something larger than themselves.

The People Are the Legacy

That philosophy extends beyond business.

For Payne, returning to Georgia State is about more than celebrating past accomplishments. It is about investing in the relationships and community that made those accomplishments possible.

It is also a philosophy fitting of the company he helps lead. At Legacy Risk Solutions, the idea of “legacy” extends beyond a name—it is about the people, relationships and impact left behind.

The wins matter, but the people who share the journey matter even more—the teammates, colleagues, clients, coaches, professors, mentors, alumni and supporters who continue walking alongside one another long after a particular season ends.

Through his position on the Alumni Association Board of Directors, Payne hopes to strengthen alumni engagement, mentor future leaders and help create opportunities for the next generation of Panthers.

Leadership That Comes Full Circle

Payne’s return to Georgia State represents the continuation of a journey rather than the completion of one.

The discipline developed as a student-athlete helped prepare him for the challenges of business. His career at Legacy Risk Solutions has given him another platform to lead, build relationships and create opportunities. Now, his position on the Alumni Association Board gives him an opportunity to bring those experiences back to the community where the journey began.

It reflects a broader belief shared at Legacy: success carries greater meaning when it creates opportunities for others.

Payne is carrying Panther pride from the field to Legacy Risk Solutions and now into the boardroom at Georgia State—not simply to look back on where he has been, but to help shape what comes next.

His next play is grounded in the same principles that have carried him throughout his career: preparation, people, progress and service.

Once a Panther, always a Panther.
